"The Dark Knight" is a 152-minute film centered around action and superheroes. Released in 2008 and directed by Christopher Nolan. The film is notable for redefining the superhero movie genre that most superhero movies follow the concepts of the film nowadays. It explores deeper themes rather than just the classic hero-villain fight.
The film focuses on the contrasting dynamics between Batman and the Joker, moving beyond the typical hero-villain plot. It questions the necessity of superheroes, focuses on the contrasting approaches to justice between the two characters, which is a central theme, Gotham’s district attorney. While Batman fights to save Gotham from the Joker and other villains, Harvey Dent turns to vengeance after his wife's death, believing that violence will bring justice.
At the halfway point in the film (106 min to 110 min), the Joker meets Harvey Dent and discusses his anarchic view of justice, tempting Harvey to adopt his ruthless methods. This conversation significantly shifts Harvey’s view of justice, leading him to target those he holds responsible for his tragedy, in which white knight of Gotham becomes the same as Joker.
This pivot in Harvey Dent’s character challenges the viewer to reconsider the definitions of heroism and justice, as he moves from lawful good to a form of violent vengeance.
